This project mitigates the incredible amount of more than 2 million tons CO2 per year.

LifeStraws® purify water without the need for heat, electricity or additional tools. This means that LifeStraws® are not only good for Africans’ health but good for the environment, as there is no need to combust non-renewable biomass such as firewood as required by conventional water purification.

Climate protection:

In April and May, 2011, more than 877,500 LifeStraw® Family water filters were distributed to approximately 90% of all households in the Western Province of Kenya. The distribution program, called LifeStraw® Carbon for Water, is providing an entire community of 4.5 million residents with quick access to safe drinking water at home.

The project is one of the largest water treatment programs ever done without government or public-sector funding, and it is the first that directly links low-carbon development with health outcomes.

Each water filter helps to save around 500 kg CO2 per year, as water has not to be boiled for purification on stoves any more. In total the project helps saving over 2 million tons CO2 each year, making it the biggest ever registered Gold Standard carbon mitigation project.

Social and ecological benefit:

8,000 Kenyans were employed during start-up, and several thousand are continuously employed during the twice annual monitoring, education and maintenance activities.

As there is no need to burn firewood or charcoal, as required by conventional water purification, the project significantly helps reduce local deforestation and thus protect valuable habitats for animals.

The LifeStraw® Carbon for Water program and sustained projects will impact four of the eight UN Millennium Goals including: Goal 4-reduce child mortality; Goal 5-improve maternal health; Goal 6-combat diseases; and Goal 7-ensure environmental sustainability.
